Since 2009 until now, over one third of the 430 judges working in the system were substituted for different reasons, said the president of the Supreme Court of Justice Mihai Poalelungi. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, he stated that the judges who are now no longer in the system either left themselves, being imposed by the situation, or were punished disciplinarily or held accountable, IPN reports.
“I cannot say that the situation in the system changed radically with the coming of new judges after 2009. But I sincerely want our legal system to be fair so that we are respected and I do not feel ashamed because I hold this post,” stated Mihai Poalelungi.
He noted it is important for correct and legal justice to exist in the state. “This should be important for the whole society and for judges first of all. All those who come to court want to win the case. The sides involved in a trail are usually both convinced that they are right. One of them evidently leaves dissatisfied. Surely I want the situation to be classical and both of the sides to leave the court satisfied,” said the judge.
He also said that he wants reforms to be done. “I will soon submit proposals for amending the legislation. These proposals will stimulate the reform we want to implement. I will make effort to convince the Government and then Parliament to adopt these changes,” stated Mihai Poalelungi.
According to the judge, emphasis should be now laid on making the judges responsible and on the quality of justice. “If the judges are made responsible, we will have quality and, if we have quality, this will make the judges be responsible. I refer to the whole legal system as society must be satisfied. If society is not satisfied, the judges must be replaced,” he said.
