Over half of villages do not have access to drinking public system water

More than half of Moldova’s villages do not have access to drinking water supplied through the public system. The localities with the lowest level of connection to the public water supply system are situated in northern Moldova, IPN reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 53 municipalities and towns and 724 villages had access to the public water supply system in 2019. This is 50.7% of the country’s localities.

At regional level, the localities of the municipality of Chisinau (88.6%) and ATU Gagauzia (78.1%) have the highest level of connection to the public water supply system, while the northern districts have the lowest level (35.5%).

Last year, the total length of public water supply networks was extended by 400 km to 14,700. Compared with 2016, the total length of public water supply systems rose by 10.5%.

The villages have the worst connection to the public sewerage system. 7.6% of the country’s settlements have access to the public sewerage service. The municipality of Chisinau has the best access to the public sewerage system – 71.4%.
