More than 81% of the citizens will participate in the national constitutional referendum on October 20, according to the Public Opinion Barometer (October 2024). Another 13.5% of the respondents said they will not vote in this, and 5.2% do not know. The study carried out by the sociological company iData.was presented by the Institute for Public Policy.

“We started questioning the citizens on September 19, when the election campaign had just begun. And that answer was not yet felt, but we finished on October 10 and surely there is an intercalation of data, there is the influence of propaganda, of the election campaigns carried out in districts,” executive director of the Institute for Public Policy Arcadie Barbăroșie stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.

The respondents were asked how they will vote if they participate in the referendum on joining the EU. 47.9% of those surveyed said they would vote “Yes”, while 23% said they would vote “No”, i.e. they are against the inclusion of provisions on EU integration in the Constitution. 14.6% would not vote and 14.5% - don’t know or didn’t answer.

“Let’s compare the answer to practically the same question: “If a referendum were held next Sunday and you were asked to vote on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, would you vote for or against?” Here, 54.5% of the respondents would vote “for”, which is by 6.6 percentage points more than at the previous question. And 32.4% would vote “against”, which is more than at the previous question. Where are the others? Here the answer probably lies in the absence of an answer, or in the people who did not want or did not know how to answer,” explained Arcadie Barbăroșie.

iData executive director Mihai Bologan said that the research covered a sample of 1,100 respondents from all the territorial-administrative units, except for the Transnistrian region and for the Moldovan citizens living abroad. The sampling error does not exceed ±3%.
