More than 15,000 cases of infection with HIV were recorded in Moldova by January 1, 2022. In the first ten months of the year, there were confirmed 753 new cases. Most of the persons detected with the infection are sexually active young people of reproductive age. HIV homosexual transmission prevails. The data were presented by the National Agency for Energy Regulation in connection with World Aids Day that is celebrated on December 1, IPN reports.
This year, World Aids Day is held under the theme “Equalize”. The slogan is a call to action. It is a prompt for everyone to work for the proven practical actions needed to address inequalities and help end AIDS. WHO is calling on global leaders and citizens to boldly recognize and address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS; and equalize access to essential HIV services particularly for key populations.
A social campaign entitled “Just TEST” will be carried out in Moldova during December 1-21. It will include activities to inform the population, to combine the forces of all the responsible authorities and the community to respond to HIV/AIDS. This way, there will be promoted HIV testing for the general population and for the groups with an increased risk of infection and also access for Ukrainian refugees. Emphasis will be placed on the reduction of discrimination against persons who live with HIV/AIDS and other key populations.
To prevent the transmission of HIV, activities will be carried out among the key populations across Moldova. Owing to the resources provided by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, 23,658 persons from groups with an increased risk of infection were covered with prevention services in the first half of this year.
Globally, 38.4 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2021. Only 85% of all people living with HIV knew their HIV status in 2021.
