More than 6 tonnes of pesticide were Friday removed from Calfa village of Anenii Noi district within the Eliminate of Acute Risks from Obsolete Pesticides Project that is implemented by the Ministry of Defense and the Calfa mayor’s office, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué of the Ministry of Defense, the depot where the expired chemicals were kept is situated in the center of the village, 10 meters from the well from where the settlement is supplied with water. The pesticides posed a direct threat to the inhabitants’ security. The pesticides will be taken in special containers to Poland to be destroyed with the NATO Partnership for Peace Project.

In 2003-2008, the National Army personnel repacked and removed over 60 tonnes of pesticides from about 18 villages of Anenii Noi district. Approximately 40 tonnes of them were destroyed in France, while another about 20 tonnes are kept at the central district depot in Danceni, Ialoveni.
