More than 5,800 persons befitted in 2020 from heart surgery in cardiovascular diseases covered with resources from the mandatory health insurance funds. Of the planned surgeries, 64 weren’t performed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IPN reports, quoting the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM).
Over 4,000 surgeries were minimally invasive surgeries in adults in the case of myocardial infarction. More than 70 were minimally invasive procedures in children with congenital anomalies, while 1,600 were cardiac surgeries.
Over 204 million lei were allocated from the mandatory health insurance funds for performing cardiovascular surgeries in 2020. Almost 3 million lei were allotted for expensive consumables additionally to the payment per treated case within the DRG (diagnosis-related group) system.
The cost of a case treated within special surgery programs in the case of cardiovascular diseases varies from 30,000 lei per minimally invasive surgery in adults to 84,000 lei per minimally invasive surgery in children. This cost is calculated depending on the used expensive consumable, costs related to treatment applied according to medical standards and national clinical protocols, provision of the necessary medicines, hotel conditions and food during hospitalization.
In 2020, the CNAM financed 108 cases within the Electrophysiological Study and Ablation program that offers access to modern heart arrhythmia diagnostic and treatment services. Over 242 million lei was earmarked in 2021 for performing cardiovascular surgeries.
The CNAM noted the insured persons who are hospitalized in a planned way or in an emergency are entitled to free operations. For planned heart surgery, the citizens must go to the family doctor, who issues a referral ticket for doing the necessary examinations and having consultations with specialists.
