More than 3 million saplings will be planted on an area of 555 hectares within the National Greening Campaign that opens on October 28 and will last for two months. Natural regeneration works will be performed on 250 hectares. The subdivisions of the Forestry Agency “Moldsilva”, the local public authorities and all those who are interested in nature in Moldova are invited to take part in the campaign, IPN reports.
Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Vasile Batca told a news conference that the other ministries, agencies or local public authorities will receive an invitation to take part from “Moldsilva” on October 23. “The campaigns will include the planting of trees and bushes on areas managed by “Moldsilva”. The forests are in need of regeneration,” stated the minister.
“Moldsilva” director Ion Haralampov said such works are performed in autumn because the saplings adjust better and easier develop roots in this period of the year. The saplings will be provided by the subdivisions of forestry companies. The oak, ash, maple trees and acacia are the most popular species. All the 24 subdivisions of “Moldsilva” are ready to take an active part in the planting of trees and bushes.
Approximately 60,000 hectares of forests were planted in Moldova starting with 2005. As a result, the wooded areas expanded by about 3%. Moldova’s forest stock represents 10.2% of the territory. The authorities aim to increase the figure to 20-25%.
The central districts of Straseni, Nisporeni, Calarasi and Hancesti are the greenest ones. The southern area is the least forested. Of the 421,700 wooded hectares, 86% are owned by the state, 13% are managed by the local public authorities, while 1% belong to private business entities.
