Over 380 road accidents reported in Moldova so far this year

More than 380 road accidents occurred in Moldova over the first three months of 2023. They claimed 22 lives and injured 451 persons. The speed that is not adjusted to visibility, conditions and situation on the road remains the leading cause of traffic accidents, shows an informative note issued by the General Police Inspectorate, IPN reports.

According to the quoted source, the inappropriate speed was the cause of 30.03% of the accidents reported in the period. Fifteen persons died, while another 143 were injured in these. Speeding is also among the leading causes of road accidents. Two persons were killed, while 12 were hurt in accidents blamed on speeding.

The number of road accidents due to imprudent driving decreased by 55%. Of all the accidents, 160 involved vehicles and pedestrians. These resulted in 16 deaths and 153 persons hurt.

The data show that in 2020-2023, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 11.3%, of dead persons – by 47.6%, while of injured persons – by 5.3%.

In March, Parliament adopted a law by which harsher penalties for not giving way to pedestrians and cyclists were introduced. This way, drivers who will not give way to pedestrians or cyclists face fines of up to 1,800 lei and five penalty points. If the same violation is committed again during the same year, the fine will rise to 2,500 lei and the person will be banned from driving for a period of 30 to 45 days.
