More than 350,000 violations were recorded last year with the help of the automated road traffic surveillance system “Traffic Control”. Among the main violations are speeding and crossing at red traffic lights. The authorities are in the process of extending the video traffic monitoring system, planning the construction of 23 more posts, in addition to the 73 existing ones.
In a response to IPN, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that, based on the recorded violations, about 46,600 contravention reports and decisions on contravention cases of the ascertaining agents of the National Public Security Inspectorate of and territorial police inspectorates were drawn up.
The smaller number of proceedings, compared to the number of violations recorded by video cameras, is due to the fact that the general statute of limitations for contraventions is one year. Thus, the procedure for holding accountable with the compiling of reports on contraventions committed in the course of 2023 is going on for a large part. Respectively, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it is too early to have concrete figures on the number of reports drawn up and the amount paid.
The automated traffic surveillance system currently consists of 73 posts, of which 48 road traffic surveillance posts are located in Chisinau. Currently, all posts are functional. Also, 23 new posts are to be built on national roads and in the municipality of Chisinau municipality. For the purpose, project documentation is being developed – design of constructions, resistance elements, electrical networks and topo-geodetic and geological design.
“The primary goal of the “Traffic Control” system is to automatically detect and confirm road traffic violations committed by drivers of vehicles at an intersection or on a road section, contributing this way to minimizing the number of committed contraventions and reducing the number of traffic accidents on national roads and in Chisinau municipality,” said the Ministry.
Subsidiarily, an important role is played by the ensuring of public order and security, collection of information about the road traffic situation in the surveillance areas in real time, identification of stolen vehicles, accumulation of evidence to solve cases and holding accountable of persons who committed violations.
