Over 200 cyclists from 7 countries competed for President’s Cup

Over 200 cyclists from 7 countries participate at the international cycling race for the Cup of the President of the Republic of Moldova, 3d edition, which took place on Sunday, June 11 in Chisinau.
The head of state, Vladimir Voronin declared for the press, that the cycling Cup of the President has an international character, fact that confirms the expectations of the organizers. The President expressed his hope that the number of the participating countries will increase every year.
According to the head of the National Olympic Committee, Nicolae Juravschi, cycling in Moldova has nice traditions. Moldovan representatives participated at almost all the international cycling races, excepting the one from Sidney. “This year’s edition is organized at a very high level and proves that this type of sport has a future in Moldova”, states Juravschi.
Juravschi mentioned that Moldova participates this year with a team of very well prepared sportsmen, one of the most strong Moldovan cyclists is Alexandr Pliuskin, European champion and world vice-champion among juniors. According to the estimations of the specialists, he will become a high level sportsman. The chairman of NOC considers that in 10 years cycling in Moldova will be comparable to the countries where this sport became a style of life.
The holder of the cycling World Cup, Andrei Cimili, said that the idea to organize the Cup of the President belongs to him. According to him, this edition is spectacular, especially because this year for the first time came representatives of 6 cycling schools from CIS, and as well cyclists from Romania.
If at the previous editions, the Cup of the President was won by Moldovan teams, this year Moldova ranked second. Ukraine won three top positions.
