Over 180 hectares of land were destroyed as a result of wildfires in a number of districts. Firefighters dealt with 71 cases of fire, of which 59 involved dry vegetation and 12 landfill waste. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations warns the population about the major risks involved in such fires and urges to observe the fire prevention rules, IPN reports.
Contacted by IPN for details, Liliana Pușcașu, press officer at the Inspectorate, said that the burning of dry vegetation and waste poses a major danger and involves severe penalties. According to the legislation, the people who cause such fires face fines of 10,000 to 15,000 lei or community service.
The press officer noted that they cooperate with representatives of the Ministry of Environment and mixed groups of people are constituted to monitor particular areas and prevent fires.
One of the largest fires broke out on the outskirts of Mîrzoaia village of Nisporeni district, where the flames destroyed 7 hectares of vegetation. In Ratuș, Criuleni, the flames affected over 15 hectares of land, and in Echimăuți, Rezina, the fire destroyed 10 hectares. In Sărata-Răzeși, Leova, a fire engulfed 15 hectares of reeds, requiring the urgent intervention of rescue crews.
Firefighters were also called out to extinguish fires that broke out at waste dumps in Văsieni, Cantemir and Cucuruzeni.
According to the authorities, the fires spread rapidly due to the wind and low humidity, endangering both the environment and nearby homes.
Vegetation fires were also reported in the Transnistrian region. On Sunday alone, the fire destroyed 14 hectares of dry grass, reeds and waste in the districts of Slobozia, Grigoriopol, Dubăsari and Rybnitsa.
The authorities recommend avoiding using open fires in areas with dry vegetation and carelessly throwing cigarette butts or other smoldering objects. The population is urged not to remain indifferent to such dangers and to notify the 112 Service if they notice a fire.
