The capital’s authorities have launched works for the reclamation of the temporary landfill in the Ciocana sector and the construction of a new transfer station equipped with a modern waste sorting line. The total value of the project, financed by European funds, exceeds 160 million lei, IPN reports.
The new transfer station will be equipped with advanced sorting lines, allowing for greater efficiency in selecting recyclable waste. It will serve as a connection point to the future waste recycling center, for which the municipality has allocated a 15-hectare plot of land.
This is the first time such waste management infrastructure is being built in Moldova, according to the interim director of Regia Autosalubritate. Igor Girlea stated, “This is a large-scale investment that will transform the way waste is managed at the municipal level.” Meanwhile, Mayor Ion Ceban emphasized the importance of the investment, made possible through European funding from multiple sources.
The European Investment Bank, through the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment, contributed over €4.5 million. Additionally, the E5P fund provided €5 million in support, while a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development adds another €3 million.
During the project launch event, authorities highlighted that this initiative represents a significant step toward improving waste management infrastructure in Chisinau and aligning with European environmental protection standards.
