The cultural and artistic events devoted to the celebration of Our Language Day will take place in the National Assembly Square in Chisinau. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca has told Monday’s City Hall meeting he doesn’t want the holiday to be marginalised, as it happened last year when the communist government restricted the celebration of the holiday to the Stephan the Great Park. City Hall officials say the Government gets actively involved only in organising the programme for the Independence Day, also known as the Day of the Republic, celebrated on August 27. Thus, the holiday of Our Language could be placed on the shoulders of the municipality. Head of the City Department for Culture Leonid Gorceac stated that for many years now he hasn’t managed to get the Government’s consent to install the bust of Liviu Rebreanu on the Classics Alley. “Although the bust is ready and the draft decision submitted for consideration, the response of the Culture Ministry is evasive”, says Gorceac. In his words, the bust of Liviu Rebreanu is the only one that hasn’t been installed so far, in agreement with the Classics Alley concept. Dorin Chirtoaca stated that the Government is harming itself through such actions. “Even if the Government has something against the classics, the lack of Rebreanu’s bust doesn’t change in any way the situation as the other classics are still there”, the mayor pointed out. The Classics Alley sculptural compound was inaugurated in 1958 and now includes 24 busts of classic authors. The bust of Liviu Rebreanu, sculptured in a highly distinctive manner by the late Milita Petrascu, was supposed to be installed on the Classics Alley back in August 2005.
