OSCE PA seeks transformation of peacekeeping mission in Transnistrian region into civilian one

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly asks that the peacekeeping mission in the Transnistrian region should be transformed into a multilateral civilian mission, as a resolution on the Republic of Moldova, which was adopted at the 30th annual session of the PA in Vancouver held between June 30 and July 4, provides, IPN reports.

Promo-LEX Association said the OSCE PA invited all relevant actors to initiate political discussions with the aim of transforming the current peacekeeping operation in the Transnistrian region into a multilateral civilian mission under an appropriate international mandate that would reflect the real needs on the ground.

The OSCE PA recognizes that the conflict in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova continues to pose a serious threat to security and stability in the OSCE area, and reaffirming OSCE participating States’ commitment to attaining a peaceful, comprehensive and sustainable solution to this protracted conflict, with full respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders.

It urges the Russian Federation to resume the withdrawal of its military troops and ammunition stockpiles from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, in accordance with its constitutional provisions of neutrality and in line with the relevant 1999 OSCE Istanbul Summit decisions, as well as UN General Assembly resolution 72/282.

The PA underlines that the main goal of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process is to attain a comprehensive, peaceful and sustainable resolution based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders, with a special status for the Transnistrian region.
