The Orthodox Christians will celebrate the Holy Thursday tomorrow (also called Great or Maundy Thursday), the day when Judas betrayed Jesus. Four events of the Passion Week are linked to this day.
The first event includes Jesus' washing of the feet of the Apostles at the start of the Last Supper, giving an example of piety this way.
The second event is the Last Supper, when Jesus shared his last meal with his apostles before his death and Resurrection. In the course of the Last Supper, and with specific reference to taking the bread and the wine, Jesus told his disciples: “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Taking the cup, he said: "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
The third event took place after the Last Supper – the Prayer in the Gethsemane Garden. “As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth”, Jesus prayed to His Father.
While the Saviour was speaking, Judas came, one of the twelfth disciples. Crowds of people came with him, with swords and cudgels. The traitor has given them a sign, saying: “The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he!” Judas’ kiss was the sign of betrayal and the first step of Jesus to Golgotha. The Lord was caught by those who wanted to kill Him.
On Thursday, housewives are usually painting the eggs red.
