Opposition in Floresti district disputes legality of local elections

The opposition district councillors in Floresti dispute the legality of the local elections in this district. They say that at the recent elections, violations were committed right at the beginning of the election campaign and prior to the Election Day, including when counting the votes. This is the reason why they refuse to participate in the meetings of the district Council or to vote for its leadership. Anatolie Carbune, one of the councillors, representative of the Social Democracy Party told a news conference on Monday, July 16 that as a result of the elections considered illegal by the opposition, the ruling party obtained 18 mandates in the district council, and all the opposition parties – 15. According to Carbune, the elections were disputed both by the District Election Council and by the Court. However, the results were validated. Carbune said that those 15 councillors boycotted the attempt of the communist councillors to organise the meeting of the Council on July 12, as well as that which had to be organised on July 16. According to the Electoral Code, at least two thirds of the elected councillors must participate in the first two meetings. In what concerns the participation in the next meetings, which according to the legislation can take place with the participation of the simple majority, will be decided by the territorial bureaus of those four parties represented in the council. The cited source said that the attempts to negotiate with the district head and with the communist councillors were not successful. Amelia Turcan, representative of the Christian Democrat People’s Party said that the communist leadership of the district had put pressure and threatened the inconvenient persons, mentioning about cases which reached the European Court of Human Rights. She does no exclude the fact that the representatives of the Party of Communists will continue such practices. The opposition councillors say that they will stage protest actions if the power continues using constraints against them, considering that the only way to overcome the crisis is to organise repeat elections.
