Moldova needs to open several new consulates and at least one has to be in Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, says President Igor Dodon.

During a Radio Moldova talk show today, the president said that in Russia, our country has just one embassy in Moscow, and no consulates at all, whereas in Italy Moldova has a couple.

Opening a consulate in
Saint Petersburg is currently “on the agenda of discussions,” said Igor Dodon.

The president added that the opportunity of opening of embassies in India, Argentina, Ghana, and Ireland, as announced by the Filip Cabinet, will be reassessed “according to Moldova’s interests.”

In India, for example, Igor Dodon thinks that a Moldovan consulate is a good idea, as the nation is an important regional and global power. Also, having a consulate in Ghana will fill the void of not currently having a single diplomatic office in all of Africa.

Igor Dodon said that all of Moldova’s incumbent ambassadors are undergoing an evaluation to see who needs to be recalled, because in the last few years some of them “pushed the PDM agenda instead of pursuing the interests of the country”.
