Representatives of civil society, opinion leaders and experts discussed possible solutions to prevent the escalation of the Transnistrian conflict with President Nicolae Timofti. Political analyst Anatol Taranu has told IPN that among experts’ proposal was to activate the Club of Moldova’s Friends.

“We discussed mainly the Transnistrian issue. The head of state asked the opinion leaders and experts to propose solutions and measures. One of the proposals was to activate the Club of Moldova’s Friends and to ask the foreign ministers of countries that form part of the club to send observers to the Security Zone to monitor the situation and not to allow it to deteriorate into a military conflict,” said Anatol Taranu.

The Club of Moldova’s Friends was created about three years ago, at the suggestion of the Embassy of France. It held several meetings, including in Chisinau. The club consists of about 20 EU member states, among which France, Germany, Sweden, Romania, Spain, and Italy. “The activation of such a mechanism will be beneficial to Moldova,” stated Anatol Taranu.

The President also asked for suggestions for more actively involving civil society in making political decisions. “We considered the possibility of constituting a civil society council under the President, which will assist him in taking decisions,” said the analyst.

The meetings of the head of state and civil society representatives take place regularly, on the President’s initiative.
