A person was killed and three were hurt in an explosion that occurred in a five-story building in Orhei town. The call to 901 was received at 01:30am. The blast affected 12 apartments from the first, second and third floors, while four second-floor apartments, occupying about 200 square meters, were fully destroyed, IPN reports.

Press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service Diana Turcan said the firefighters found the body of a man aged 49 under the debris. Three persons suffered injuries. Two of the victims are receiving treatment at the Orhei District Hospital, while one person was discharged.

As a result of the explosion, the windows and doors of a number of apartments of the block were blown apart. The explosion destroyed partially the walls on the second floor, but there is no risk that the building will collapse. Employees of the Emergency Service are helping the dwellers to recover some of their belongings. A preliminary cause of the blast is the accumulation of gas. An investigation is under way.
