An exhibition of stenography will be on display in the context of the 100th celebration of the Romanian theater in Chisinau. More than 76 national graphics works from the National Art Museum of Moldova (MNAM), signed by 11 renowned scenographers, complemented by a dozen sketches and drawings representing the last performances of the National Theater "Mihai Eminescu", will edify the scenographic activity of the theater, starting with 1921.

According to the National Art Museum of Moldova general director, Tudor Zbârnea, the exhibition represents a selection of scenography sketches and costumes elaborated for various shows, which were performed during one hundred years on the stage of the Romanian theater in Chișinău, among which are works signed by the famous painter Auguste Baillayre, of French origin, established in 1918 in Basarabia, works by Nicolai Alentiev, Petru Balan, Irina Gurin, Anatolii Jeludev, Lazar Kaușanskii and other established artists. "This exhibition, organized within the framework of the National Art Museum of Moldova, the National Theater "Mihai Eminescu" and the Culture Department of the Chișinău City Hall partnership, is part of the history of the theatre, marking the dynamics of the evolution of the means of expression and the role of scenographic art in the Romanian theatre in Moldova", said the MNAM director.

The Mihai Eminescu National Theater director, Petru Hadârcă, said that the 100 years of the theater's existence represent a history literally marked by the art of scenography, not only by the play of actors, but also by the spectacular play of shapes and colors. "Masks, costumes and scenery have been essential elements of the theater, inextricably linked to its development from its origins to the present day. In the area east of the Prut, elements of scenography were found in various manifestations of the performing arts before the 20th century. However, it was not until the establishment of the Romanian National Theater, the first permanent, publicly funded repertory theater in Chișinău, that the problem of scenographic creation and production arose. And, of course, there is also the problem of plastic artists, willing to give up the right, the comfort and the individual ambitions of the ego in order to share a good part of their creative being with other beings, equally haunted and restless with creative ideas - with the director and the actors", added Petru Hadârcă.

The exhibition will open on Friday, August 20, at 12:00 and will remain open to the public until September 19.
