Exhibitions, book launches and scientific conferences dedicated to the famous Polish theater director and one of the greatest theater reformers of the 20th century Jerzy Grotowski are held in Chisinau on February 11. Writers, directors and art critics from Moldova and Romania came together for a scientific conference themed “Grotowski-Like Approaches in the Theatrical Context in Moldova”, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We organized “A Day with Jerzy Grotowski in Chisinau” in order to bring a part of the Polish theater and Grotowski's approaches to Moldova. We aim to strengthen the cooperation between the theaters of Moldova and Poland,” said Jaroslaw Godun, the director of the Polish Institute in Bucharest. Theater director Mihai Fusu, the director of the One-Actor Theater, said Grotowski is a model that the young generation can follow. “He tried to emphasize not the words, but what is behind them – feelings, movements, fantasy rendered through the body, voice. It is a ritualistic theater,” he said, adding that the theater in Moldova is different, based on dramatic texts and words. Art critic Larisa Turea said Grotowski's theater is poor in accessories and decorations. “His theater is based on the human energy, where the aim is not to imitate, but to exist,” she said. A number of books are being launched at the theater “Satiricus I.L.Caragiale”. Among them are: “Towards a Poor Theater” by Jerzy Grotowski, “Together with Grotowski. The Theater is only a Form” by Peter Brook and “Ryszard Cieslak, Emblematic Actor of the 1960s”, a collective book coordinated by George Banu. The movie “Total Actor. Memory of Ryszard Cieslak (1937–1990)” directed by Krzysztof Domagalik is shown at the same theater. The exhibition “The Laboratory Theater – Half a Century of the Foundation” was staged in the yard of the History Museum of Moldova. Jerzy Grotowski, eminent theater director, teacher and innovator of the experimental theater, was born in Rzeszów on August 11, 1933 and died on January 14, 1999.
