In the Republic of Moldova, each fifth person is older than 18. On January 1, 2018, the children numbered 676,000, IPN reports, with reference to data made public by the National Bureau of Statistics before the International Children’s Day.
In 2017, there were born 34,100 children, a decrease of 8.9% on 2016. The birth rate was 9.6 alive newborn children per 1 000 people. The natality in villages remained higher than in urban areas.
Of the total number of alive newborns, 51.5% were boys. The ratio of boys to girls was of 106 to 100.
Some 94.7% of the children had over 2.5 kg at birth. 96.9% of the children were born after a pregnancy that lasted for over 35 weeks.
The average age of mothers who gave birth to the first child was 24.8. The number of children born outside marriage remains high. These children represented 21.5% of the total.
