During two months of the installation at the Chisinau Oncology Institute, the solar panels generated 62,000 kW of electric power and helped the institute save 117,000 lei.
Contacted by IPN, the Oncology Institute’s director Victor Cernat said the solar panels help economize 25%-30% of electricity or about 700,000 lei a year. The savings during the cold period of the year will be lower as the highest efficiency is obtained in the sunny months.
Besides helping save energy, the solar panels that occupy an area of 34 ares brought also other benefits. A parking lot was built under the panels that are installed at a height of 3 meters. Also, through the agency of the project financed by the Government of Japan, the institute repaired its roof that is 6,000 square meters in area.
Victor Cernat said the Oncology Institute asked for financing for the project from the Embassy of Japan in Moldova, which is based in Kiev, at the end of 2009. The cost of the project is US$5 million and the money was offered as a grant.
Another project to conserve energy at the Oncology Institute envisions the replacement of the windows at the central surgical blocks. More than 3 million lei was allocated from the Energy Efficiency Fund for the purpose.
