Oncological Institute outfitted with modern linear accelerator

The Oncological Institute was equipped with a medical linear accelerator that will enable to administer safer treatment to patients. The equipment to the value of €1.2 million was brought from Switzerland in the framework of a project supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency, IPN reports.

According to representatives of the medical institution, the new linear accelerator is modern and ensures exigent monitoring of treatment safety. For example, the buttons on the control panel start to flash in the correct order so as to guide the operator at each step. As an additional guarantee, the system automatically performs precision verifications each ten milliseconds throughout the treatment. With such projection improvements, radiotherapists can focus their attention on the patient.

To purchase the accelerator, the Government of the Republic of Moldova allocated €500,000, while €700,000 was offered by the International Atomic Energy Agency as a grant as part of the National Cancer Control Program.
