Ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai, a member of Moldova’s first Parliament, passed away. The Ombudsman’s Office disseminated an obituary, saying that a confirmed militant for justice, equity and social progress, Mihail Cotorobai was the person who wasn’t afraid to tell the truth and to firmly plead for the preeminence of the law, human rights and democratization of society, IPN reports.

“As a member of the first Parliament, he helped build the independent state Republic of Moldova, as a judge of the Constitutional Court, he watched over the observance of the norms of the supreme law, as a university professor, he educated generations of jurists. While serving as an ombudsman, Mihail Cotorobai substantially contributed to developing the Ombudsman’s Office and to intransigently promoting the main values, human rights and freedoms,” runs the obituary.

This says that during his five-year tenure, Mihail Cotorobai didn’t hesitate to make his opinion public in an objective and trenchant way when threats to the basic human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and democracy in the Republic of Moldova appeared.

The Administration Board of the Association “Parlamentul-90” also transmitted a message of condolence, saying Mihail Cotorobai was one of the most remarkable colleagues, chairman of the commission for local self-government and local economy, a member of the Presidium and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova.

Mihail Cotorobai was born in Puhoi commune of Ialoveni district on March 25, 1951. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Saint Petersburg State University and the Retraining Faculty of the Moscow State University “M.V. Lomonosov”. He was the Constitutional Court’s officer of liaison with the Venice Commission and the Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts. During many years he worked as a lawyer, while since 2015 until now he held the high-ranking post of ombudsman. Mihail Cotorobai was awarded the Order of the Republic, the Order of Honor, the honorific title “Emeritus Man” and the title of Citizen of Honor of Ialoveni district.
