Ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai expressed his disappointment with the way in which voting aboard for the presidential runoff was organized. He considers the authorities failed to fulfill the obligation to ensure the right to vote, enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, of the Moldovans from the diaspora, IPN reports.
The ombudsman encouraged the authorities to consider the possibility of amending and supplementing the electoral legislation and introducing postal voting or electronic voting. “The obligation of the state is to permanently improve the voting procedure so as to ensure this fundamental right is exercised without impediments,” stated Mihail Cotorobai.
He added that the voters have the right to a correct assessment of the election results and the state is obliged to penalize any instance of electoral fraud.
