Olimpus-84 Chisinau won the national men’s handball championship on Wednesday, May 25, after winning the second match of the final series against The Pedagogical University of Tiraspol, 35-34 following penalty shots. Olimpus won the golden medals on home-court, Info-Prim Neo reports. The first half was balanced and ended with a slight advantage for the opposition, 16-17. The guests gained a 5 goal lead in the second half, but were still led by Olimpus less than 2 minutes before the final whistle. Yet, Alexei Covalciuc scored the equalizer for the Tiraspol side with just a few seconds left in the game, score 31-31. Thus, the fate of the match was to be decided by the penalty shots. The home team was more accurate, going ahead with 4-3. The first match that was disputed earlier had the same scenario: a tie in the allotted time and a victory for Olimpus-85 at penalties. This is Olimpus’ second title over the last two years and the team will represent Moldova in European competitions next season.
