“The German partners are waiting for the situation in the Republic of Moldova to stabilize as at a certain moment it seemed that things were running out of control. Everyone wants stabilization, clarity, reforms,” Moldova’s Ambassador to Germany Oleg Serebrean said in an interview for Radio Free Europe. He noted that Moldova is permanently requested to do reforms in justice and the freedom of the media, IPN reports.

According to the diplomat, the fact that the greatest European power holds the chairmanship of the OSCE this year is a chance for Moldova. It is important for this chance to be taken by Chisinau too, and this is what the German partners say. “So, there should be a road with two directions. Regretfully, 2016 can be a rather turbulent year in the Republic of Moldova from political viewpoint and attention should be better devoted to internal, political and economic matters,” said Oleg Serebrean.

The official stated that many voices in Germany say that the Moldovan society now regards the Transnistrian case as a peripheral one. “We must admit that the Transnistrian issue this year risks staying somewhere in the shadow not only because of the events in Chisinau, but also due to the events in Tiraspol. It is an electoral year and the power in Tiraspol was replaced,” said the ambassador.

“The Transnistrian conflict has many keys in many capital cities. Chisinau is one of these as we must also have a greater interest in this case. This is what they sometimes reproach us for in the West. During the last few years we were preoccupied probably too much with the European dimension and with internal policy matters and thus neglected this issue that is sensitive for the whole Europe.”

According to Oleg Serebrean, it would be good if Moldova manages to sensitize Germany and this country, for its part, manages to bring the Transnistrian issue into focus so that it is not forgotten. The Transnistrian dispute, unlike other conflicts existing in the Black Sea region, is the most unfrozen one.
