The local elections in Chisinau could bring some surprises. If the communists will field a poor candidate, the opponent who will be supported by the largest number of political parties will have the chance to win, Oleg Serebrian, the leader of the Liberal Social Party (PSL), stated on Monday, March 12.
PSL further maintains its position of designating a single candidate for mayor of Chisinau, at least on behalf of the liberal parties. At present, the social-liberals are negotiating with other several parties and, first of all, with the Liberal National Party, in an attempt to merge the parties, if possible before the local elections. As Serebrian states, “this liberal roundtable remains open for other political parties as well, including for those which hurried to give a negative mark to the project regarding the unification of the liberal segment”.
Referring to the candidacy for the position of mayor of the Liberal Party’s vice president Dorin Chirtoaca, PSL leader said that he could be a candidate of the liberal parties if this fact is discussed upon, which has not been made so far. According to Serebrian, Chirtoaca should run for mayor as an unaffiliated candidate to have the support of a larger number of political parties.
The general local elections will be held in early June. Until now, two political parties have announced their candidates – Liberal Party fielded Dorin Chirtoaca and Democratic Party - Vlad Filat.
