People of culture and senior state officials said goodbye to poet Dumitru Matcovschi. The body was laid at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, where hundreds of people brought flowers and mourned the poet’s death, IPN reports.
President Nicolae Timofti was accompanied by his wife Margareta Timofti. He said that Dumitru Matcovschi’s death is a great loss for the whole country. “Dumitru Matcovschi loved this land and all of us. He struggled and scarified himself for us. The entire people of Moldova mourns his death and is near the grieving family. God rest his soul,” he stated.
The president of the Academy of Sciences Gheorghe Duca said that Moldova and its people lost a great literary man and creator of the beautiful. The whole academic world of Moldova made almost the impossible to bring Dumitru Matcovschi back to life after he was involved in a serious road accident in 1989. But this time the Moldovan doctors and specialists were powerless.
After the farewell ceremony, Dumitru Matcovschi’s body was taken to his native village Vadul-Rascov in Soldanesti district. The poet will be buried on June 29. A number of buses will set off for the village from the square of the Academy of Sciences tomorrow at 06.30.
