Octavian Armașu was discharged from the office of governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM). A draft decision providing for this was adopted by the votes of 81 MPs on the evening of December 21, IPN reports.

The dismissal of the NBM governor was proposed after hearings organized by Parliament on the progress made in the recovery of financial resources stolen from the banking system.

The document notes the insufficient and defective work done by the National Bank of Moldova in the context of the examination of processes and persons involved in the bank fraud case. The NBM governor Octavian Armasu did not fulfill the duties stipulated in the legislation.

In the same plenary sitting, there was adopted a decision drafted by the group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists. This says that the activities of institutions responsible for the recovery of financial resources stolen from the banking system are inefficient and insufficient. Within three months, these institutions will present in Parliament the actions taken to recover the damages from the bank fraud and the subsequent actions to improve the recovery process.

Octavian Armașu had served as governor of the NBM since November 2018. He was preceded in this post by Sergiu Cioclea (April 2016 – November 2018), Dorin Drăguțanu (November 2009 – April 2016) and Leonid Talmaci (June 1991 – September 2009).
