The state institutions must have agents who would monitor how the rights of the persons with disabilities are observed. The practice is implemented in such counties as Poland and Romania and Moldova can learn from this experience, considers the executive director of “Motivatia” Association Igor Meriacre.

Igor Meriacre has told IPN that even if the law in Moldova guarantees the respect for the rights of the persons with disabilities, there is no control system. The disabled persons should also be more active. “The young people with disabilities who want to find a job often wait for somebody else to prepare the necessary documents and to conduct them to work. These persons are passive and are not used to having responsibilities,” said Igor Meriacre.

The Association “Motivatie” recently made a map of accessibility to some of the institutions. While drafting the map, the Association’s beneficiaries were asked to name the institutions where they encountered access-related difficulties and which institutions are important to them, but there was no feedback. “The persons with locomotor disabilities say they do not have access to certain institutions, but they do not act when they can do something to change things,” stated Igor Meriacre.

The accessibility map accompanied by a report will be presented to the public and the authorities in the near future. It is designed to improve access to institutions not only for persons with disabilities, but also for mothers with little children in wheelchairs and for elderly persons.

Since founded in 2004,”Motivatie” Association had involved over 1,000 persons with disabilities in different projects initiated by it.
