After the Association Agreement with the European Union was signed on June 27, 2014 and especially after it was ratified in Parliament, the pro-European coalition stopped existing, while the legislative body became non-functional even if it included the same MPs who were elected as a result of the general mobilization on November 28, 2010. Such an opinion was stated by expert Oazu Nantoi, a member of the Civic Platform Dignity and Truth, who, together with representatives of a number of civil society platforms, took part in the public debate “The pro-European government: ‘labor pains’ and quality of society in the role of ‘midwife’, staged by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova.

Oazu Nantoi quoted a definition saying democracy is an instrument that does not allow us to live better than we deserve. In this respect, Parliament is the mirror of society in which we see ourselves and the question is – to what extent our society and the government are pro-European? The last election campaign was held with serious deviations. There were created such clone parties as the Communist Reformist Party, while the Party “Patria” was removed from the electoral race two days before the election day. The financial factor determined electoral competition because the political bias was evident even on TV channels. Furthermore, the pro-European parties lost about 160,000 voters compared with the previous parliamentary elections. “Consequently, both the way we voted and the behavior of the parties that declared themselves pro-European are, to my mind, below that red line that can be called ‘quality of society’, which allows us to speak about a conscious choice of Moldova’s European future,” stated the expert.

Oazu Nantoi also said that until there is no democratic state with the rule of law and until the politicians are pro-European only in statements, we cannot speak about the European integration of Moldova. The pro-European coalitions mainly lost the voters’ support, while the behavior of the politicians, especially of those who declared themselves pro-European, causes repugnance. Society must be able to generate phenomena different from those existing now, which, on the one hand, will support new political projects, while on the other hand, will determine changes inside the exiting parties.

The debate entitled “The pro-European government: ‘labor pains’ and quality of society in the role of ‘midwife’” is the 37th of the series of debates “Development of political culture in public debates” that are organized with the support of the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
