Number of young people dropped significantly in last four years

Moldova has fewer and fewer young people in the age group 14-34. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in the period 2018-2022, the number of young people decreased by over 110,000. The number of young people aged between 20 and 24 has decreased the most.

As of January 1, 2022, the number of citizens with regular residence was 2.6 million people, of whom 670,900, or 25.8% are young people aged 14-34.

According to the results of the Labor Force Survey, over a third of young people aged 15-34 have a job (37.3% or about 244 thousand people), about 2% (11 thousand) are unemployed and the rest 61 % (over 398 thousand) are economically inactive. Of the total inactive, over 42% are enrolled in the national education system.

The youth unemployment rate is higher compared to other age groups. In 2021, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15-34 was 4.1%. 21.1% of the total unemployed aged 15-34 were in long-term unemployment (12 months and more).

The main sources of income for young people (14-34 years old) were from their parents (33.2%) and from salary activity (32.1%), followed by social benefits (9.9%) , individual agricultural activity (7.2%) and remitances (6.3%).
