The number of serious and very serious offenses committed by Moldovans in 2019 was higher than in 2018. Minister of the Interior Pavel Voicu told a news conference that the number of offenses generally decreased, but the serious offenses increased in number, IPN reports.
Of the over 29,000 offenses committed last year, 194 were classed as serious and very serious, as opposed to 184 a year earlier.
A number of 167 persons were killed last year. There were recorded 320 rapes and 94 robberies. The number of cases of hooliganism exceeded 1,300. On the other hand, there were committed fewer thefts and cases of trafficking in human beings and in drugs.
“We admit that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova had bigger expectations of the police, as regards the reduction in the number of offenses, especially of the exceptionally serious ones,” stated the minister.
The police logged 2,572 road accidents that claimed 274 lives and injured over 3,000 persons.
As many as 352 offenses and 30 traffic accidents that resulted in 41 persons injured and eight deaths were recorded in the first nine days of 2020.
