Number of preregistrations passes 14,000 mark

The number of Moldovan citizens who announced their intention to vote on October 20 outside the country exceeded 14,000 on Tuesday. Most of the preregistrations indicated on the website of the Central Election Commission – about 5,400 – are for the Russian Federation, IPN reports.

According to CEC data, Russia is followed by Italy, where 1,520 Moldovans expressed their intention to vote so far. In Germany, the figure stands at 1,333, in the UK – 728, in the U.S. America – 841, in France – 635, in Canada – 476. In the other countries, the number of preregistrations is lower than 400.

Preregistration is one of the three criteria used by the Central Election Commission to decide the number of polling stations that will be established abroad.

As for postal voting, which will be used in six countries and for which preregistration is mandatory, the number of applicants is 1,121. In the U.S., 616 Moldovans announced their intention to vote by mail, in Canada – 328, in Norway – 62, in Sweden – 55, in Finland – 48, in Iceland – 12.

The deadline for preregistration is 6 September.
