The number of persons who died in road traffic accidents in Chisinau municipality so far this year is higher compared with the corresponding period last year. A number of 53 persons died in road accidents by November 16 this year, as opposed to 48 pesos last year. The data were presented by Constantin Pereanu, head of the Road Accidents Service of the Chisinau Police Division, in a news conference given on the occasion of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, IPN reports.
“During the past five years, the number of traffic accidents that resulted in victims rose by 14%,” stated Constantin Pereanu. The number of persons who perished is by 10% higher compared with 2013. Most of the road accidents that result in death are due to speeding, movement on counterflow lanes, non-giving of way and jaywalking. “The accidents occur mainly on Fridays and between 6pm and 8pm,” stated the police officer.
The Chisinau Public Health Center launched a guidebook on road traffic safety and a stoplights guide that will be distributed to kindergartens and schools to inform children of primary classes. The Center’s head Luminita Suveica said that given the so large number of road accidents that result in death, the population should be sensitized, starting from the young.
“The people hurry and do not realize that they risk causing an accident when they do not fasten the seatbelt. Many parents do not install child seats to transport children safety. I also refer to speeding, alcohol consumption and speaking on the phone while driving,” stated Luminita Suveica.
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of November.
