Moldovans’ preferences as regards the country’s foreign course are almost equal. A survey carried out by the Sociological Research and Branding Company (SRBC) of Romania shows that 42% of the respondents are for joining the EU, while 48% are for joining the Eurasian Union. The survey results were made public in a news conference at IPN.

Alexandru Larionescu, research director at the SRBC, said that besides those who chose one union or another, 10% of the respondents expressed neutral positions.

According to the survey, if a referendum on Moldova joining the Russia – Belarus – Kazakhstan Customs Union was held, 48% of the respondents would vote in favor, 21% would vote against, while 16% are undecided. If a referendum on Moldova joining the European Union was held, 42% of those polled would vote for, 23% would vote against, while 12% are undecided.

The margin of sampling error is 3% so that the number of those who would choose a union or another may be even closer, said Alexandru Larionescu.

Asked from where they inform themselves about the current events, 59% of those questioned said that from the TV, 20% named the Internet, 8% – the radio, while 4% the newspapers.

The survey was commissioned by Moldovan businessman Renato Usatyi, who settled in Russia. His political consultant Mihai Motoc told the journalists that Renato Usatyi wanted to find out the sociopolitical options of the Moldovans and selected thus a renowned Romanian company to do an independent research.
