The number of infections with COVID-19 last week increased by about 18% on a week before. The infection rate also rose compared with the previous weeks, to 1.38. Among the most affected regions are Soroca, Stefan Vodă, Dubăsari, Glodeni, Chisinau, Edineț, and Cahul, Alexei Ceban, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency, was quoted by IPN as saying in a press briefing.
The average age of the infected persons is 47. The number of infected women is higher than of infected men, constituting 59%. The average incubation period of the virus is 5-6 days. The urban areas are more seriously affected than the rural ones. The import cases represent only 2%.
The average age of the persons who succumbed to the virus was 66. About 99% of those who died suffered from at least one more disease. The incidence rate in Moldova is 1,929 cases per 1 million people and 67 deaths.
As many as 1,444 healthcare workers contracted COVID-19 and twelve of them died.
According to the head of the National Public Health Agency Nicolae Furtună, the number of infections with COVID-19 increased in the recent past even if the restrictions were kept and this is due to the fact that the people contravened them. “They celebrated birthday parties, had barbecues and took part in burials and ceremonies,” he stated, noting that this is not a new wave of infections, but the previous wave expanded.
Asked if the Sunday of the Dead transferred to June 6-8 could be again postponed if the number of infections increases further, Nicolae Furtună said such events should be annulled. The contagion rate and the number of recorded infections are high and the situation can get out of control. “As an epidemiologist, I think we should refrain from such celebrations and should remember the dead on other occasions and in different ways,” he noted, adding relaxations now are not recommended.
The infections with COVID-19 now total 6,704. Almost half of the patients got cured. As many as 3,100 cases remain active.
The death toll stands at 234. Of those who were hospitalized, 266 are in a serious state.
