The number of cases of COVID-19 in Moldova is projected to rise to over 5,600 in the middle of May, if all the infection control measures are respected, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social protection has said. According to the pessimistic scenario, the number of confirmed infections will exceed 37,000, IPN reports.
The COVID-19 incidence rate is 75 cases per 100,000 people, the death rate being of two persons per 100,000 people.
The districts of Ștefan Vodă, Glodeni, Soroca, Edineț, and Fălești and the municipality of Chisinau were the worst hit by COVID-19. The cases reported in these administrative units represent 60% of all the recorded infections.
Alexei Ceban, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency, after the meeting of the National Focal Point said that 798 cases of COVID-19 were recorded during the week of April 6-12, while during April 13-19 the figure rose to 810. The rise is of 1.5%. As many as 14,055 samples have been processed so far and 12,203 persons were investigated by one lab test. The infection rate among persons suspected of being infected is of 20%.
The average age of persons who contracted COVID-19 in Moldova is 47 years, with 58% being women and 56% being from rural areas. The incubation period of the virus, since contagion until the appearance of the first symptoms, is of six days. 5% of all the infections were imported.
The persons who succumbed to COVID-19 had an average age of 67. 52% were men. Some 98% of the persons who died suffered from at least one disease, while 51% from two and more diseases. Most of them suffered from cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory infections.
Two in ten persons infected with COVID-19 are medical workers, with 635 healthcare workers being infected in total.
As many as 560 persons recovered and this is 21.4% of those infected. Most of them are women. Fifty persons were discharged on April 21.
One more death from COVID-19 was reported in the morning of April 22. This is a woman aged 43 from Slobozia. She was hospitalized on April 6 with bilateral pneumonia. She also suffered from chronic kidney disease and was on hemodialysis.
