The Cyber Security Center of the Center of Special Telecommunications, which is the only national institution empowered to record cyber incidents and provide relevant information, so far this year presented 35 reports on incidents that pose a threat to the Government’s information security.

“If an incident is identified, we inform about the risks and type of the incident and propose remedies, if there are no competent specialists at the institutions facing risks,” Cyber Security Center director Natalia Spanu said in a news conference centering on the challenges, trends and solutions related to cyber security.

According to her, the number of such incidents has increased. A reason is that a higher number of people use mobile devices to access websites. “The institutions need a security policy. We have very wise information security and must keep pace with it and be aware of the risks and threats to which we are exposed. The security measures of information systems envision first of all the installation of licensed software,” stated Natalia Spanu.

The number of virus alerts in emails rose from 9 to 107 a day over the last six months of this year, which is 12 times higher than in the corresponding period last year.

Director of the Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Section of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova Donald Carroll said that U.S. experts offer Moldova assistance in combating cyber crimes. “Over the last few years, we donated more than US$100,000 for training employees involved in combating cyber crimes. We also provide training abroad for Moldovan investigators,” he stated. He also said that Moldova faces problems related to trafficking in human beings and has to deal with this offense that is cybernetic in character as well. The ensuring of cyber security is important for preventing money laundering too.
