Number of cases of COVID-19 goes up

The number of infections with the novel coronavirus in Moldova has been rising for four consecutive weeks. During June 8-14, the number of new cases grew by 29% compared with a week ago. The number of deaths increased by 30%. The data were presented in a news conference staged by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, IPN reports.

Alexei Ceban, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency, said that an infected person during almost three days stays at home or is present in crowded places before going to see a doctor
for hospitalization. “A worrisome moment is the fact that the persons seek medical assistance with delay and thus represent a source of infection,” stated the doctor.

He noted there are cases when the persons go to see a doctor in ten days even if they have such symptoms as cough and sneezing. “We insistently ask you to see a doctor or to call 112 on the fist symposiums, such as fever, coughs, sneezing, fatigue or pronounced exhaustion, loss of taste and smell
. If you have breathing difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact your family doctor,” stated the epidemiologist.

The total number of infections in Moldova now stands at 13,106. Some 57% of those infected have recovered. The active cases number 5,132, the casualties - 449, while the patients in a serious state - 455.

Infection incidence is of 3,771 persons per 1 million people. The morality rate is of 129 deaths per 1 million, while the fatality rate is of 3.4%. As regards incidence by administrative territories per 100,000 people, Bălţi is the worst hit with 862 infections. ATU Gagauzia comes next with 757 cases, being followed by Taraclia with 750 cases. The lowest incidence is in Şoldăneşti - 24 cases.

The epidemiologist said the number of new cases the last week increased considerably in Drochia, Floreşti, and Rezina, with Bălţi seeing the highest rise in the period.

Almost 80,000 tests for COVID-19 have been done so far. The persons older than 50 are the most affected ones. The average age of those infected is 47. The women prevail among those infected. The urban areas are more affected than the rural ones. A number of 756 children and 122 pregnant women have contracted the virus by now.

The average age of those who succumbed to the disease was 66 and 99% of these suffered also from other diseases. The persons with cardiovascular diseases are the most vulnerable to COVID-19.

The infected include 30 priests, eight of whom are from Bălţi. Two priests died.
