The epidemiological threshold for acute respiratory infections in the Transnistrian region was exceeded by 25%. Statistics show the infection rate is of 800 cases per 100,000 people, at a time when the threshold is of 700, IPN reports.

More than 4,300 persons got infected last week alone. These are only persons who went to see a doctor. Doctors do not remember such a surge in incidence earlier. It is yet early to declare an epidemic, said Angela Muntean, chief of the epidemiology section of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Center of Transnistria.

According to the doctor, known flu strains were identified this year and the treatment thus follows the standard scheme. Vaccination is traditionally considered the most effective protection method. To prevent mass infections, quarantine is instituted in schools and kindergartens. The interior of public units of transport is treated with special disinfectants.

The Tiraspol trolleybus company disinfects the seats and bars in trolleybuses twice a day.

Doctors warn the flu virus is transmitted not only by air, but also by contact with contaminated objects. The highest number of infections is expected to be witnessed at the end of January and the start of February.
