The number of beneficiaries at the center for the homeless persons located at Haltei St in Chisinau has doubled with the decline in temperatures. The center’s acting director Veaceslav Macovei has told IPN that they have now 63 beneficiaries.
The persons get warm clothes that are offered as humanitarian aid to the center. Besides, the beneficiaries are being offered underwear and personal hygiene products bought with funds allocated by the Chisinau City Hall. During the holidays, the General Social Assistance and Health Division contributed to creating the atmosphere, offering presents to the center’s beneficiaries and employees’ children.
The newcomers stay isolated for 14 days so as not to expose the other beneficiaries to the risk of infection with COVID-19. About 80% of the beneficiaries are elderly persons who cannot work. Thirteen persons are confined to bed and another 13 persons move with someone’s assistance only.
The persons also benefit from personal counseling or group assistance from medical assistants and the psychologist. Occasionally, they are visited by priests. Before the winter holidays, they were involved in laying out works at the center. 20% of the beneficiaries work, primarily as street sweepers.
The beneficiaries can stay at the center for a year. They can be visited on condition that the anti-COVID-19 measures are respected.
