Nominal salary up, real salary down last year

Last year, the nominal gross average monthly salary was over 10,000 lei, a 15.5% increase in nominal value, However, in real terms, when adjusted to the consumer price index, it dropped by 10.3%, according to the National Statistics Bureau.

ITC remains the highest paying industry, with an average north of 28,000 lei.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the average nominal monthly gross salary in units with four or more employees in both the real sector and public sector was 11,539.1 lei. This means an increase in nominal value by a little over 18% compared to the same period last year, and a 10.6% decrease in real terms.

In financial and insurance activities, the average salary was almost 23,000 lei. In activities of production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning, the salary was over 16,000 lei.

The lowest values of the average monthly salary were recorded in accommodation and catering activities 7,370 lei, and also in agriculture, forestry and fishing - 7,709 lei. In art, recreation and leisure activities, the average salary was just over 8,300 lei.

The real earnings index in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the fourth quarter of 2021 (calculated as the ratio of the gross nominal salary index to the consumer price index) was 89.4%. The real earnings index in 2022 compared to 2021 was 89.7%.

According to the NSB, the average number of employees in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the fourth quarter of 2021 was slightly down (by 0.4%). The most significant decreases were recorded in agriculture, forestry and fishing - by 9.7%; construction - by 9.6% and in the extractive industry - by 6%.
