The Union of Volunteers of Moldova has petition President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker Marian Lupu and Prime Minister Vlad Filat to support a bill on the legal status of war volunteers, which they had submitted to the Government and the Parliament repeatedly. If their request remains unanswered, they threaten to start protesting. The Union's leader Sergiu Caracai told Info-Prim Neo that the Bill on the legal status of war volunteers is aimed to define their identity, the contents of social policy and the forms of protection for volunteers. The Union of Volunteers also demands measures to increase the local public administration bodies’ responsibility towards the participants in the War on the Nistru River. “We want concrete measures to distinguish combatants that represented the Ministry of the Interior, the National Army and volunteers”, said Caracai. Another request is June 19 to be declared the Day of Commemoration of Those Fallen for the Independence and Integrity of the Country. Sergiu Caracai says the request is a reaction to statements made by General Ion Costas who declared on radio that volunteers had played a minor role in the war. “These false and insulting allegations of Mr. Costas are misleading the people, especially the young generation that needs patriotic education. Costas is actually a traitor and we’ll take action against him”, said Sergiu Caracai. The petition was approved at the meeting of the Council of the Union of Volunteers by its around 5,600 members on March 23.
