An organization of volunteer-veterans of the Nistru war are demanding that Democrat leader Marian Lupu make a public retraction and apologize after he called some of the combatants in that war “criminals” while speaking at a Russian radio station, Info-Prim Neo reports. Marian Lupu said the following: “There are soldiers who, willingly or unwillingly, execute orders, and on the other hand, there are also criminals”. “By stating this Mr. Lupu labeled as criminals those who responded to the government's numerous appeals for saving country's independence and sovereignty by volunteering to join the ranks of the defenders of this country”, Sergiu Caracai, the chairman of the National Council of Volunteer-veterans, said in a statement. “We the volunteers didn't wage war on any foreign independent and sovereign state. If we did that, then we could be called brigands and criminals. But we just defended our land and families against the killers that were sent in by Russia. Is it right then when we are insulted like that by being called man-slayers and criminals?”, reads the statement. The organization is also upset by the fact that the volunteer combatants haven't been recognized as defenders of Moldova and haven't been given any legal status, and ask the Parliament to adopt without delay a special law to change this.
