The water of the Nistru River meets the sanitary norms and has a normal retention level. Water samples are taken every quarter and the latest results showed that it can be used both for domestic purposes and for irrigation, said the head of the Water Management Division of Moldova’s Water Agency Ion Cuceinic. IPN asked for information from him in connection with the Nistru Day that is marked on May 26.

“After the snow melted, the water flows brought a lot of waste into the river. But activities were carried out to improve the quality of water and to clean it,” said Ion Cuceinic. Currently, the flow capacity ensures the water needs of Moldova and Ukraine and can do so even in case of drought.  There are enough reserves of water in the Nistru,” he stated.

Ion Cuceinic also said that the people use to throw waste near rivers and this is a dangerous practice that can have serious consequences. “The Nistru and Prut represent the most important water resources of Moldova. 80% of the used water comes from these rivers. We must protect these sources of water,” he added.

According to Moldova’s Water Agency, the water in the Nistru totals almost 3 billion cubic meters. The Nistru is Moldova’s main source of water that supplies with water Ukrainian settlements as well, including Odessa region. The river springs in Ukraine, near the border with Poland, and flows into the Back Sea. It has a length of over 1,300 kilometers, 500 of which are navigable. It has 12 tributaries.

The Nistru Day in Moldova is celebrated on May 26, under a Parliament Decision.
