Nistru River freezes over, ACC assures water supply won't be disrupted

Chisinau's water utility Apa-Canal (ACC) assures water supply to the municipality won't be disrupted despite the fact that the Nistru River, the main source of water for the city, froze over near the Vadul lui Voda station. “We can state with all responsibility that at this point there is no reason to fear that the residents of the capital city, or others, might remain without water”, said Alexandu Josan, the deputy head of the station. “To avoid any risk, our specialists take all the necessary measures. During the night, when the temperatures are the lowest, our specialists do everything to keep the temperatures inside the pumping facilities above zero”. Even if the Nistru has frozen, the ice layer is not so thick”, stressed Josan. Chisinau receives 98% of its water supply from the Nistru via the Vadul lui Voda station. The remainder is taken from 74 artesian wells.
