Deputy mayor of Chisinau municipality Nistor Grozavu was freed from house arrest and will be investigated under judicial control. The Chisinau Appeals Court on May 30 accepted the appeal of the deputy mayor’s lawyers and quashed the decision of the common law court. The information was confirmed for IPN by the Appeals Court’s spokeswoman Octebrina Popa.

Contacted by IPN, head of the Municipal Legal Assistance Division Valeriu Bogdan said that in such circumstances deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu can fulfill the duties of mayor general and can hold the post of mayor on an interim basis.

The Chisinau City Hall remained without administration after deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu and mayor general Dorin Chirtoaca were placed under house arrest on suspicion of abuse of power and influence peddling, while the Chisinau Council’s secretary Valeriu Didencu was remanded in custody for 30 days. As the mayor and his deputy as well as the Council’s secretary could not fulfill their duties, the financial activity of the local budget could have been blocked.
